| Dmitry Gubin:
Bio
Dmitry Gubin was born in Kharkov, USSR, (now Kharkiv, Ukraine), in 1975. He was the older of the two sons in the family. Gubin’s father was an artist and was a very strong influence on Dmitry’s artistic development. Under his direction, Dmitry Gubin attended informal ceramics, painting, drawing classes, and art history lectures throughout his childhood. After fleeing USSR, due to anti-Semitism, and arriving in the US with his family in 1989, Gubin continued studying painting at LaGuardia HS of Music and Art in New York City. In 1995 Gubin was accepted into the School of Visual Arts in New York City where he studied photography, graduating in 2000 with a Bachelor’s degree. Throughout his undergraduate studies, Gubin worked as a black and white printer at various darkrooms and laboratories throughout the city. Upon graduation, Dmitry Gubin began working as a commercial studio photographer at a small studio in the Chelsea district of New York City. After moving to the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, NY, Gubin became a member of a local artist organization South Of the Navy Yard Artists. As a member, Gubin participated in various exhibitions and open studio events put together by the organization. Eventually, Dmitry Gubin was elected to a position of Community Relations chairperson. In that capacity he created a dialogue between member artists and the local business community. In 2009, Gubin moved to East Orange, NJ. Currently, he is pursuing a Master’s degree in Art and Design Education at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Gubin’s work has been shown in various galleries nationwide. Artist Statement Through visual imagery, I initiate a dialogue with the viewer. I bring to the table my innermost feelings and ideas that cannot be explained through verbal communication. For that reason, I employ the use of ambiguous personal symbols and gestural paint movements. The original meaning behind the symbols is not important, as in the process of observation and through previously acquired personal experiences, the viewer begins to understand and connect with images subconsciously. In an attempt to keep up with changes in my moods and feelings, I tend to work fast, creating layers upon layers of images, and compositions. Sometimes, I reference simple images, sketches, or photographs at the start of the process. Yet, while in the creative trance, I discover new ideas and feelings, which alter the initial goals until the end result achieves a life of its own.
