About the Event

A firestorm of controversy was ignited when a powerful artwork by Kara Walker was installed at the Newark Public Library. Some demanded that it be removed, calling it offensive. Others, protesting censorship, insisted that it remain on view. Ms. Walker will appear in person to discuss her work.

About Kara Walker

Kara Walker is a contemporary artist whose works address such themes as power, repression, history, race and sexuality. A recipient of the prestigious McArthur “genius” grant, her art has been displayed internationally.

About Nell Painter

Nell Irvin Painter is a distinguished historian and scholar, Princeton University professor emerita, prolific author and contemporary artist who resides in Newark, NJ.
