About WBGO: Founded in 1979, Newark Public Radio, Inc. is a publicly supported cultural institution that champions jazz via WBGO Jazz88 FM and wbgo.org, and through live broadcasts and innovative music programs (including Latin jazz, blues, and R&B). Recognized as the nation’s pre-eminent jazz radio station, WBGO also presents award-winning regional news and public affairs programming, including Newark Today with Mayor Cory Booker. WBGO is one of the most respected jazz presenters in the country and is NPR’s primary jazz provider, producing nationally syndicated programs such as Jazz Set with Dee Dee Bridgewater and the annual New Year’s Eve marathon, Toast of the Nation.
WBGO is currently considering candidates for a Major Gifts Officer. WBGO is recruiting an entrepreneurial-minded development team that will help build a robust major gifts program to capitalize on an untapped prospect pool from a loyal membership base. All candidates must have experience working in a not-for-profit development environment and be familiar with, and proficient in, the moves management process—identification and research, strategic analysis, cultivation, solicitation, closing, stewardship. The new development team will implement a capital campaign to raise funds to place the main WBGO transmitter in midtown Manhattan (WBGO headquarters will remain in downtown Newark). This transformative project has the potential to reach over one million new or underserviced listeners, and serve as launching point for an ongoing major gifts initiative ($10,000+ gifts).
We are seeking a traditional front-line fundraiser profile: ambitious, proactive major gifts officer with sophistication and savvy, who identifies, researches, cultivates, solicits, and skillfully manages a portfolio of 150-200 major donor prospects at varying stages of the moves management process. Candidates should have at least 3 to 5 years experience in face-to-face solicitation and closing of meaningful gifts, and first-hand knowledge of the major gifts cultivation process, preferably in a cultural institution. Candidates will be expected to be out of the office frequently visiting top prospects face to face as well as remaining in contact by phone and email. Candidates should have strong organizational, interpersonal and communications skills, with the ability to synthesize and articulate WBGO priorities and match them with donor values and interests, plus the ability to prepare dynamic written and oral presentations. Revenue and contact/cultivation goals will be assigned. Competency in Microsoft Office and donor database applications, e.g., Raisers Edge, is expected in order to be able to effectively enter and manage prospect information, including contact reports, follow-up actions, research, strategies, and proposals. Expertise in other development functions, i.e. planned giving, direct mail/annual fund, capital campaigns, events, institutional grants, would be a plus. This is a full-time position with benefits. WBGO is an equal opportunity employer.
Submissions by EMAIL ONLY to cferrero@wbgo.org with "Major Gifts" in subject line; replies will be sent only to candidates chosen for an interview.
