The title of this show refers to the context of our times and the many levels of disparity we are trying to reconcile. As a renowned sculptor Magdalena Abakanowicz wrote “Art will remain the most astonishing activity of mankind born out of struggle between wisdom and madness, between dream and reality”. Despite our current political, environmental and economic climate which affects the morale of all of us, artists continue to create. They are looked upon for guidance, whether addressing issues directly, indirectly or providing a momentarily respite. Art elevates us to our shared humanity. This show is a survey of sculptural work by artists working in and around Newark and viewers are invited to experience the diversity of work and to draw their own comparisons and reflections. These works traverse the imagination using the democratic space of art to provide options on how we might be able to move forward.

About the curators:
Agnes Deja is a visual artist and an independent curator, based in NJ / NY area and closely knit to the Newark artists community. She holds a M.A. in Fine Arts from Montclair State University and a M.A. in Psychology from Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland where she grew up. As an artist working in sculpture Deja relates to her fellow artists’ struggles to find suitable working and storage spaces. One of Deja’s inspiration for curating this show was to bring together sculptors working in and around Newark, a city undergoing rapid gentrification, to facilitate networking, future collaborations and finding solutions to shared problems.

Sarah Walko is an artist, writer, director and curator with a BA in studio art practices from the University of Maryland and an MFA from Savannah College of Art and Design. For the past thirteen years she has curated for institutions, non-profits and independent projects, has served as a director of three arts organizations and has been a contributing writer on contemporary art, literature and film for numerous publications. She is currently the Director of Education and Community Outreach at the Visual Art Center of New Jersey.

Intimately Held: Safe-keeping through Touch
works by Sally Helmi, words by Hayley Mojica

As an extension of her nursing process, Sally Helmi dissolves into a strategy that assesses, diagnoses, speculates, intervenes, rationalizes and evaluates. Intimately Held: Safe-keeping through Touch, invites you to participate in an understanding that the veil between humans, their hearts, fears, and aspirations is translucent. This entreats the wispy and ephemeral—that which is not always so difficult to lift. By peeling aside this fragile layer, and extending softness through, lightness can seize the lungs. Some variation of comfort and cohesion can pillow your aching, sickly head—if only for a moment.

The work included in this exhibition embraces the palpable nature of our healing course through touch and texture. As an intervention to bridge the dynamic relationship between sickness and health, Sally uses a process that captures the symmetry in our emotional healing mechanisms with that of the human body.

Exhibition on view thru February 7, 2019
Admission is free and open to the public.

This event is sponsored by our neighbors 27 Mix and Kilkenny Alehouse.
