BRAHMS’ FIRST SYMPHONY
February 25 @ 3:00 pm
RUNE BERGMANN conductor MARIANNE BEATE KIELLAND mezzo-soprano NEW JERSEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Brahms took 14 years to write his first symphony, a masterwork for all time. Celebrated Norwegian mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland journeys through Mahler’s searching Wayfarer, one delight from an unforgettable evening of late-Romantic treasures. WAGNER Overture to Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg Wagner’s opera was a departure in many ways from his usual style, but its overture retains his vivid sense of triumph and passion. MAHLER Songs of a Wayfarer Mercurial and ecstatic, Mahler’s charming themes appear later in his first symphony. This, his first song cycle, announced his genius to the world. BRAHMS Symphony No. 1 Brahms, in awe of Beethoven’s Ninth, aspired to equal it in the finale of this proud and majestic symphony.
