Composed in 1936, Dona Nobis Pacem is a powerful cantata for soprano and baritone soloists, chorus, orchestra and piano. Echoing his experiences in France and Greece in World War I where he served in the Field Medical Corps and Royal Artillery of the English Army, Vaughn Williams draws from the Bible, sections from the Mass, anti-war speeches of the day, and poems by Walt Whitman to evoke destruction and death brought about by the violence of war, with an overarching message of peace and reconciliation.
In Mass in the Time of WarJoseph Haydn’s setting of the Mass provides insight of 1796 Austrian church music affected by imperial decrees, which proclaimed a mobilization and forbid discussion of peace until the French were driven back to their border. Haydn was moved to create his masterpiece to assist in this mobilization, as “sounds of war” were heard approaching the Austrian border. The work is the first of six settings of the Latin Mass, including the oratorios The Creationand The Seasons, to form the body of Haydn’s latter period of vocal works and is undoubtedly among his finest creative achievements.
The non-profit Choral Art Society of New Jersey, which was established in 1963, incudes members from Union, Bergen, Morris, Essex, and Middlesex counties. The group stages concerts of choral works in January and May and hosts a community Messiah Sing each December.
Funding of the Choral Art Society of New Jersey has been made possible in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, through a grant administered by the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs.
