Mirror Mirror is an exhibition and publication featuring contemporary artists whose work could be classified as portraiture (in the broadest sense of the word). A portrait is most commonly recognized as a likeness of the face, or upper part of the human form. The artworks challenge dominant paradigms about such things as gender, race, age, societal norms, technology, and beauty. The emphasis on the exhibition is on provoking curiosity and discussion rather than providing a definitive definition of what constitutes a ‘portrait’. The diverse array of artists in have approached the subject of portraiture in a multitude of ways. Some have chosen to work with traditional, realistic representations of the human face, while others have used unconventional materials to create abstract references. Artists have looked to the past for inspiration – questioning who have created portraits and what agendas have been served through the process. Artists have looked to their immediate environment – friends family and strangers – to reexamine their world, critiquing implicit assumptions and biases. Other visionary artists look forwards to create images of aspirational and inspirational potential future worlds. Including the work of Manuel Acevedo, Zoë Charlton, Paulo Cirio, David Antonio Cruz, Kevin Darmanie, E.V.Day, Leah DeVun, Nona Faustine, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, Anne-Karin Furunes, Phyllis Galembo, Chitra Ganesh, William Kentridge, Riva Lehrer, Ani Lui, Jessamyn Lovell, Hyphen-Labs, Peggie Miller, Anna Olgier Bloomer, Polixeni Papapetrou, Patricia Piccinini, Wendy Red Star, Faith Ringgold, Kevin Sampson, María Verónica San Martín, Leo Selvaggio, Laura Splan, Dread Scott, Beat Streuli, Arne Svenson, Shoshanna Weinberger, Deborah Willis, Martha Wilson.
