Cutting-edge new play development meets insightful community dialogue with NJPAC Stage Exchange: The Commissions 2016.
Now in its second season, NJPAC Stage Exchange is collaborating with three professional New Jersey theaters to commission and produce new plays by a talented trio of Garden State playwrights. Following their staged readings at NJPAC in the spring of 2016, each new work will receive a full production during the 2016-17 season at the partner theatres.

Madison Public Library – 39 Keep Street, Madison, NJ
A discussion about the creative process of playwriting with a panel consisting of the participating playwrights and artistic directors. Moderated by Prof. Robert Sandberg of Princeton University.
Each reading in the intimate Chase room cost only $5 and all proceeds go toward the evening’s beneficiary organization, selected for its mission’s connection to the play’s theme and issues. Following each reading, the playwright will be joined on stage by a panel of academics, activists and professionals to discuss the issues that the play addresses

A docu-play based on interviews with people who have suffered, or are currently suffering, from mental illness as well as their families, health care workers, and social service organizations.

The story of a New Jersey woman taking up the charge of having an “Indian” mascot removed from a local high school, and the surprising division it causes in the community.

SURELY GOODNESS MERCY by Chisa Hutchinson
Friday, June 24 at 7pm
Follows the unlikely friendship between a Newark elementary school student and the cantankerous lunch lady, as both lean on each other to navigate life in a system stacked against them.
