Cutting-edge play development meets insightful community dialogue at NJPAC Stage Exchange, a collaboration of three professional New Jersey theaters and a talented trio of Garden State playwrights. Following readings and Q&As at NJPAC related to each Stage Exchange work, a world premiere production will be staged by each dramatist’s partner theater.
Darrah Cloud’s Turning dramatizes the experiences of young women from New Jersey who competed in the inaugural women’s gymnastics (“turning”) Olympic event in Berlin, in 1936 – the first year that women’s gymnastics was included in the Olympics, and the first time that world-class gymnastics coaches had to coach women. At the time, women’s turning was considered a taboo sport, and many of the team members had to rise above resistance from their fathers, husbands, and others.
Centenary Stage Company in Hackettstown is the partner theater for Turning.
This season’s Friday night Stage Exchange readings also include:
April 20: A Better Place to Be: Stephen Fredericks and Growing Stage: The Children’s Theatre of New Jersey, Netcong
May 25: Tanya Saracho and Two River Theater, Red Bank
