One of the very first developments in film photography occured in Newark, New Jersey before the turn of the 20th century. In 1887, Reverend Hannibal Goodwin invented celluloid film in order to project images on a wall for his Sunday school classes at the Plume House on Broad Street. His invention would later be the catalyst for the film photography and motion picture industry.
X is a group exhibition of local film photographers who apply a mixed media approach to their work by combining painting, drawing, printmaking, and video art with film photography. The exhibition presents the intersection of digital and film photography, illustrating film’s progression into digital media. Within their work, Canares, Davis, Dimaculangan, Intriago, McGuire, and Melgar document and articulate changing landscapes within their communities, their individual cultures, and illustrate historical and imaginative narratives. X explores their empirical approaches to film photography such as using different shutter speeds, lighting, and development processes.
The works in the exhibition embody the formal qualities of the letter “X” because they display the intersection and overlap of mediums. The mixed media works in the exhibition expand upon film photography’s impact within visual arts and communication. Through their work, the artists in X acknowledge the rapid growth of the film photography industry in Newark and the years of experimentation that led to the dawn of the medium.
The artists in X are based in Newark, Union and Montclair, New Jersey and they are excited to share their work at an influential gallery like Index Art Center.
Performances will begin at 7 pm.
