The Honorable Thomas H. Kean
When we think of the Newark arts and cultural communities, we immediately think of Thomas H. Kean, the former Governor of New Jersey. During his tenure, Governor Kean understood that Newark needed to sustain a vibrant arts community in order to create jobs, attract new businesses and tourists, and improve neighborhoods and the quality of life.
Governor Kean fought to increase the New Jersey State Council on the Arts’ annual grant-giving budget. By increasing the number of grants and the amounts received, organizations like the Newark Arts Council, and so many other arts and cultural groups based in Newark, we able to expand and succeed. Governor Kean’s vision was and is to see Newark as a major state and national cultural center.
