Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony, filled with dark-chocolate harmonies, has been seducing newcomers to classical music for a century. No wonder its melodies have also cropped up in movies and pop songs. In Nico Muhly’s new piano concerto, Sounding, melodies inspired by hymn tunes are also abundant. Here is edge-of-your-seat beauty, topped off by the timelessness of Debussy’s musical portrait of moonlight.

Sergei Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2

Program update: Double bassist Xavier Foley is unable to appear on the program. Pianist Adam Tendler will replace him for these concerts. Gregory D. McDaniel, the New Jersey Symphony’s Colton Conducting Fellow, will conduct Debussy’s Clair de Lune and the New Jersey premiere of Nico Muhly’s Sounding. Music Director Xian Zhang will conduct Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2.
