Artist in Residence for the Lower Passaic River

About the Artist in Residence (AIR) Pilot Program

The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Artist in Residence (AIR) pilot initiative to address critical water quality challenges is intended to demonstrate how arts and culture can help stewardship partners work more effectively with communities, build understanding of water quality and other environmental concerns, establish stronger connections between communities and their waterways, and better meet communities’ unique needs. The EPA AIR pilot was developed in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). It will support a broad range of local artists and culture bearers in six geographic areas within National Estuary Programs (NEP) and Urban Waters Federal Partnership (UWFP) locations.

The Lower Passaic River has been selected to conduct an Artist in Residence program. Please see below for more information on the program in each location, the full Call for Artists, and the application deadlines.

Some highlights about this Artist in Residence program taking place in the Lower Passaic River:
- A total budget of $72,000 is available under this Call for Artists for each UWFP location
- Funds granted to artists can be used to support artist fees, equipment/supplies, fabrication, installation, and documentation of the art
- The 13-month residency is expected to start around March 2025
- This artist residency is open to all artists including but not limited to visual, literary, and performing artists
- Includes an initial exploratory phase to enable artist to immerse themselves in the environmental challenges facing the waterfront community
- Artists with a meaningful connection with the waterfront community of the Lower Passaic River are highly encouraged to apply.
