The Curatorial Intern will play a crucial role in supporting the curatorial team of Newark Arts Festival. This internship provides a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about the arts to gain hands-on experience in curatorial practices, exhibition coordination, and event planning within a dynamic cultural setting.
Responsibilities

Exhibition Planning:

Collaborate with the curatorial team to conceptualize, plan, and organize art exhibitions for the Newark Arts Festival.

Contribute to the selection process of artists and artworks that align with the festival's mission and theme.

Logistics and Coordination:

Work closely with artists, galleries, and venues to coordinate logistics for the installation and deinstallation of artworks.

Assist in the management of exhibition timelines and ensure deadlines are met.

Documentation and Archiving:

Support the documentation of artworks through photography, written descriptions, and other necessary means.

Assist in the maintenance of a comprehensive archive of past and current exhibitions.

Gallery Management:

Aid in the preparation and organization of gallery spaces, ensuring a visually appealing and cohesive presentation of artworks.

Assist with the creation of exhibition signage and labels.

Maintain artist and artwork lists.

Communicate with artists to collect contracts and insurance documents.

Research and Writing:

Assist in the development of exhibition-related written materials, such as artist statements and gallery guides.

Event Support:

Provide on-site support during Newark Arts events and info sessions, ensuring the smooth execution of exhibitions and related activities.

Assist with event setup, guest coordination, and other event logistics.

Requirements, Skills, and Qualifications
-
Currently enrolled in a relevant field such as Art History, Museum Studies, or Fine Arts.

Strong interest in contemporary art and curatorial practices.

Excellent organizational and communication skills.
-
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic knowledge of design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite).

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Compensation
-
$22.50 per hour
INTERNS WILL WORK 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.

Workdays: 4 days per week; hybrid position (3 days onsite; 1 day remote)
PROGRAM DAY:

On Fridays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.

These hours are separate from the internship hours.
Eligibility
To be eligible for Arts Intern 2025, you must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree and:

Currently enrolled as a full-time rising junior (a current sophomore)
– or – -
Currently enrolled as a full-time junior – or –
-
Currently enrolled as a full-time senior graduating by fall 2025.
You must either reside or attend college in New Jersey.
