Details:

Plein air painting is a French expression meaning “in the open air,” and refers to the act of painting outdoors. The term was first used to describe Claude Monet and the Impressionists in France as they attempted to achieve an “intense impression of outdoor daylight and open air” in their paintings, whether in oil paints or in watercolor.

Since then, the term “en plein air artists” has been used to describe people who paint outside. Using a pochode box (originally artists used a cigar box for a paint holder and palette! ) and an outdoor easel, paints and brushes, plein air artists strive to capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or the subject before them, in the “fresh air”.

Most often plein air painters work on small canvases or boards, creating paintings that can be accomplished in a two- or three-hour painting session, before the light change color and form. The most successful plein air painters limit their colors and the sizes of their canvases for that purpose. Painting sizes of 5” x 7”, 6” x 8”, 8” x 10”, 9” x 12”, and 12” x 16” (maximum size!) are acceptable.

Planned events leading up to the Plein Air Exhibition to provide information and resources to artists interested in plein air painting include:

Belmar Arts is pleased to present their first Plein Air Painting Exhibition with the following guidelines:

Each artist is limited to 3 submissions; as this in NOT a juried show, we hope to encourage the maximum number of artists to participate and grow interest in plein air painting.

Painting sizes up to and including 12” x 16”, not including the frame, will be accepted. Framing is not necessary, but artwork must be wired appropriately for hanging, no sawtooth hangers please!

Entry guideline:
Open to artists of all ages.
All works entered must be original creations by the artist, completed within the past three years and not in violation of copyright or trademark protections from any other artist.
Artwork delivered must match your digital submissions. If works are below our professional standards, or are not display ready, the committee has the right to deny submissions with no refunds.
